Warsaw announced that a wall would be built at the European Union’s external border to discourage migratory movement.
According to the Polish Interior Ministry, Poland will begin construction of a wall on the border with Belarus in December. This is where many migrants are currently gathered. The wall will be finished in the first half in 2022. Monday, November 15.
“The priority business that we must do is an absolutely strategic, priority investment for security of the nation’s citizens and its citizens”, said Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski.
The ministry stated that the contracts for the respective work would have to be signed by December 15, and that it would start later in the month. Workers would need to rotate 24 hours per day, with three shifts.
The structure will cost 353 million Euros ($ 407 Million) and span 180km, roughly half the length of border between Poland/Belarus. The construction was approved by Parliament last month.
Many thousands of migrants mostly from the Middle East have attempted or crossed this border since the summer. This phenomenon is at the root of a deep diplomatic crises with Belarus.
Poland sent thousands of troops to the border, declaring a state emergency. It also quickly erected a fence made of sharp barbed wire.
