Doctors discovered that the thirteenth victim of the crisis at the Eastern borders of the European Union was dead.
He was a 1-year-old Syrian boy. He had lived with his parents for a month and half in the forest that divides Poland and Belarus. A humanitarian group found him dead on the night of Wednesday, November 18th.
According to Polish doctors who spoke to The Guardian, he is one of the youngest victims of the European Union’s migration crisis.
Many thousand of people have attempted to cross the Polish border with Belarus since last summer. This Eastern European country is ruled by Alexander Lukashenko.
Brussels claims that the president brought migrants from the Middle East into Belarusian territory, granting them visas. However, he then gathered them at the Polish border. His goal was to press the EU into imposing sanctions on his regime following his contest re-election for a sixth consecutive term in August 2020. This followed fierce repression by the Belarusian opposition.
Poland has sent soldiers to its border, creating a terrible humanitarian situation. Many thousands of migrants were left stranded in the forest where temperatures are dropping below freezing.
The price was paid by this child. According to “The Guardian”, doctors located the family around 3:00 AM on Thursday, according to information provided by the Polish Medical Emergency Team. The father of the boy was stabbed in his arm and the mother was stabbed in her leg. Their child was already dead.
Since the outbreak of the crisis, at most 13 migrants have died at their border. The situation has been dramatic in the past two week, particularly since the fall in temperatures and violent clashes among migrants and police.
