Iranian drama by Asghar Fahadi, featuring Amir Jadidi (Mohsen Tanabandeh), Sahar Goldust and Fereshteh SareOrafaiy (2,07).
He smiles even when he isn’t smiling. Rahim (Amir Jadidi), a calligraphy artist, has a noble but deceitful face. It’s impossible to guess what he’s thinking. Whether his altruism, humility, and generosity are real or fake. Whether he is willing to run from the light. You can brag or hide. He is Asghar Farhadi’s cinematic embodiment. A woman is found with a bag filled with gold coins on a street in Shiraz. The woman is Rahim, a divorcing and imprisoned man who has a two-day leave. This treasure could be used to repay his debt towards his unremitting brother-in law, which earned him an inflexible sentence of three years in prison.
After much hesitation – this is the primitive scene scene – he decides, through a small advertisement, to return the money to his friend who had lost it. The story is made public, the propaganda is created, and social media explode. Rahim is “a hero”, and his loyalty, integrity, and selflessness are praised. The prison’s management confronted by a series suicides it wants to hide, Rahim is cajoled to release the model captive as a reward. His young son, a stammering child, is present at his side on the stages, where it’s celebrated. This adds to his humanity and the emotion of his admirers. The machine that makes a living legend in this dictatorial country will soon stop working. You can haro on your hero soon.
After detours less inspired and more touristic by France (“the Past”) and Spain (“Everybody Knows”), the filmmaker of “La Fête du feu” and “Une separation” is back in his country. He films the daily Kafkaesque, implacable administration and invisible Caesarism of mullahs like no other. Farhadi, master of the ellipse and trompe-l’oeil, follows the fate of his hero to decry all that is ugly and despairing in Iranian society. . His portrayal of manners is, as usual, based on Hitchcockian Dramaturgy. This scenario has a line where the suspense takes from the thriller. This is a devious thriller without any gunshots or scenes of crime. Grand prize at Cannes Film Festival. A hero would have been rewarded palm gold. Jerome Garcin
French comedy by Jérôme Bonnell, with Grégory Montel, Grégory Gadebois, Anaïs Demoustier, Léa Drucker (1h30).
Unit of time is twenty-four hours. Or the rout of Jonas (Grégory Montel), obsessed with the idea of recovering the object of his passion: Léa (Anaïs Demoustier), lyrical singer tired of her indecision. From the bar downstairs, he writes her a letter under the eyes of the boss (Grégory Gadebois), a benevolent spectator, then crosses paths with his ex-wife (Léa Drucker, who, in one scene, infuses the film with seriousness). A filmmaker of infinite delicacy, Jérôme Bonnell probes masculine fragility by mixing several destinies – psychotic, crooked entrepreneur -, so many distorted projections of Jonas. Misalignment of feelings and misunderstandings abound in this melancholy comedy punctuated by “the Letter to Elise”, which deals with a thorny theme: how to grow up saying goodbye? Sophie Grassin
American satirical thriller written by Jim Cummings & PJ McCabe. With Jim Cummings (VA Newcomb), PJ McCabe (1h31).
An artist on the verge of marrying receives an anonymous invite to a sexual date. The overrated “Thunder Road” is now behind us. Jim Cummings, actor-director and sort of Jim Carrey in independent cinema (tense physique and neurotic smile, humor of embarrassment), has a better satire of Hollywood and sofa promotion at the time #MeToo and cybertrafic. It’s unbalanced but it’s stimulating. There’s an unexpected thriller aspect to toxic virility. Nicolas Schaller
Romanian comedy by Radu Jude, with Katia Pascariu, Claudia Ieremia, Olimpia Mălai (1:46).
Comedy punks who take self-importance too seriously are more irritating than anything. Radu Jude is one such comedian. He holds a pertinent postulate. (The leak of a naked sextape by her husband leads to the banning of a teacher. Golden Bear at Berlinale 2021 N. S.
French cartoon by JeanJacques Denis and Anthony Roux. With the voices of Lila Lacombe and Kaycie Chase (1h14).
Worcenog, a frog sorceress, summons him to give Dragon his second greatest asset. Dragon is threatened by the extinction of fires and yields to him Hair. Hair is his little human daughter. The princess travels around the world and meets her greedy father. Anti-capitalist tale that decries the profit-driven, frenzied race. Although the drawing is of standard quality, it can sometimes touch virtuosity if it uses distinct colors. The animation with the dragon abandons the straight line and is inspired to watercolor to create a fairy-like creature of any beauty. Xavier Leherpeur
